Money exists to be spent.
Protect, save, earn, grow. You do all four so that you can spend well at the end. Grow the number without deciding what it is for, and the years you spent in Japan do not come back.
Why Spend well comes last
Last does not mean least. It is the opposite: this is the point, and the other four are the method.
The order means this. Without protecting, you lose it. Without saving, there is nothing to start with. Without earning, it does not grow. Without growing, you have no choices. And when you finally do have choices, not knowing what you want leaves all of that effort hanging in the air.
Spending well is the opposite of going without. It is deciding where to cut so you can spend without guilt on what you kept.
Some things can only be spent while you are here
Some things money can replace. Some it cannot. Your years in Japan are the second kind.
What closes at New Year and what people eat. What you can actually do at your local city office. What it takes to bring your family here. None of it is available to you once you have left. Paying the same amount later does not buy it back.
So this section is not about frugality. It is about pointing your money and your time at the things that expire.
This skill still works after you leave Japan
The meaning of osechi food, and how to get a copy of your residence record, are useless outside Japan. That is fine.
What stays is underneath:
- Decide yourself what to cut and what to keep. Cutting everything is not a skill
- Spend first on what does not come back — time, years with your family, whatever only exists where you are now
- Money spent on people lasts longest — family, friends, the ones who helped you
- Join the culture before you understand it, not after. Understanding follows taking part
Back home, none of that changes. The country is different; the way of deciding is identical.
And this is the easiest of the five to pass on. Your children will never know how much you saved. They will know exactly what kind of household spent money on what.
